Function of a Control Valve

A control valve adjusts fluid flow within a pipeline to maintain desired process conditions, such as pressure, temperature, or liquid level.
It acts as the final control element in a process control loop, responding to signals from a controller or automation system to ensure system stability and efficiency.

Components of a Control Valve

• Valve Body: The main structure through which fluid flows and includes the port that is opened or closed.

• Actuator: Mechanism that moves the valve plug or disc; it can be pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric.

• Valve Stem and Plug: The moving element that directly controls flow and interacts with the seat.

• Positioner: Motorized or pneumatic device that ensures the valve reaches the desired position in response to a control signal.

• Bonnet and Packing: Provides sealing to prevent fluid leakage along the stem.

Types of Control Valves

• Globe Valves: Provide precise flow control, commonly used for throttling applications.

• Ball Valves: Provide quick shutoff and moderate flow control.

• Butterfly Valves: Suitable for larger pipe diameters and lower-pressure drops.

• Diaphragm Valves: Used for corrosive liquids or slurries with sensitive applications.

• Knife Gate Valves: Ideal for slurry or viscous fluids.
